The short answer: November to April is the classic recommendation, and for good reason, but it's not the only good time to go — it depends what you're optimizing for.
Dry season (December–April)
This is the northeast monsoon period: calmer seas, less rain, and daytime temperatures typically in the high 20s to low 30s°C. It's also the busiest and most expensive time to visit, since it lines up with Northern Hemisphere winter holidays.
Wet season (May–November)
The southwest monsoon brings more rain, but usually in short, intense afternoon bursts rather than all-day washouts, with clear skies in between. Prices typically drop meaningfully in this period, and it's a genuinely good trade-off if you don't mind the occasional shower.
For Vilu Residence specifically
Whale sharks and manta rays around South Ari Atoll are present year-round, so unlike destinations built around a narrow wildlife season, there isn't a "wrong" time to visit for the marine life itself. Weather aside, the main seasonal factor is price and crowd levels rather than whether you'll see whale sharks.
